Maryland managed an 8-4 run over their first 12 games of the season. Since the Big Ten schedule kicked in however, the Terrapins are just 2-5. They’ve lost to Iowa, Illinois, Wisconsin, Rutgers and Michigan with victories otherwise over Northwestern and Illinois.
In the Illinois game back on Friday, the Terrapins held a slim two-point lead at halftime. Maryland outscored the Illini 44-30 from there in a nice 81-65 victory. Tops in scoring was Donta Scott with 25 points and six rebounds off the bench.
Over on the Rutgers side, they started the year on a bumpy 5-5 pace then hit a win streak over Maine, Central CT State, Michigan and Nebraska. It’s been a 2-2 run since with wins over Maryland and Iowa between losses to Penn State and Minnesota.
In Saturday’s matchup versus Minnesota, the Knights were outscored 31-30 in the first half and 37-35 in the second in a 68-65 loss despite the Gophers missing three starters. Rutgers’ Geo Baker topped the team on 25 points and two assists.
The Knights are 4-0 ATS in their last four at home and 17-35 ATS in their last 52 Tuesday games. Rutgers is 5-2 ATS in their last seven overall.
Meanwhile, the Terrapins are 5-16 ATS in their last 21 after an ATS win and 3-13-1 ATS in the last 17 Tuesday games. The over is 5-0-1 in Maryland’s last six road games.
PICK: I’m going to take a stab on Rutgers, but probably staying away. Big Ten games are a competitive dice-roll proposition these days. In any case, the last time these teams met up back on January 15, the Knights posted a 70-59 win. Rutgers shot 48.2 percent from the field in that one with a 34-33 rebounding advantage and 16 team assists. This rematch certainly won’t be a carbon copy, but Rutgers has generally been playing well during this 6-2 stretch. Should be a great matchup and a fun game to watch regardless.
