The Fort Wayne Mastodons and the Northern Kentucky Norse meet Friday in college basketball action from BB&T Arena. Fort Wayne is sitting at 11-8 so far this year. The Mastodons are coming off a win over Youngstown State. As for Northern Kentucky, they’re currently 9-9 and fresh off a win over Wright State. Fort Wayne got of to a spotty 5-7 start this year with wins over Earlham, Austin Peay, SE Louisiana, Northern Kentucky and SEMO. Since then it’s been a 6-1 run with wins over Youngstown State, Robert Morris, Detroit, Michigan Dearborn, Robert Morris and Youngstown State again.
In the second matchup versus Youngstown State on Sunday, the Mastodons scored 32 points in the first half and 50 more from there in an 82-71 win. Leading the scoring was Jalon Pipkins with 19 points and five rebounds. Damian Chong Qui added 18 points as well.
Over on the Northern Kentucky side, they began on a 5-8 run this year with wins over Wheeling Jesuit, Eastern Michigan, Canisius, Alice Lloyd and Green Bay. The Norse are 4-1 since then, beating UIC, IUPUI and Wright State in their last three alone.
In the Wright State game, the Norse had a slim 35-34 lead at halftime. Northern Kentucky posted a 38-29 run from there on the way to a 73-63 win. Tops in scoring was Marques Warrick with 23 points, one rebound and one assist.
The Norse are 2-5 ATS in the last seven at home and 4-1 ATS in their last five overall. The under is 5-1 in Northern Kentucky’s last six overall.
Meanwhile, the Mastodons are 4-0 ATS in their last four road games and 6-1 ATS in their last seven after an ATS win. Fort Wayne is 4-1 ATS in their last five Friday games.
PICK: I’m going to stay with Fort Wayne. This should be a pretty good matchup, though; both teams are playing well right now. The last time these squads met up was back on December 4 in a 71-57 Mastodons victory. Fort Wayne shot 48.1 percent from the floor in that one, but the Norse won the rebounding battle 32-30. This one should be closer, but I still like Fort Wayne to power out an eventual cover—and maybe a win.
