The Elon Phoenix and the Towson Tigers meet Saturday in college basketball action from SECU Arena. Elon is coming off a Thursday matchup versus James Madison. In that one the Phoenix managed a four-point win. As for Towson, they played William & Mary in their Thursday game. The Tigers ended up winning by 15 points. Elon had a rough start to the year at 4-13 through their first 17 games (ending in a loss to Towson). The Phoenix managed a 3-3 stretch with wins over James Madison, William & Mary and UNC Wilmington, then fell to Charleston last weekend.
On Thursday versus James Madison, the Phoenix were outscored 24-29 in the first half but stormed back on a 46-37 run in the second for a 70-66 comeback win. Hunter McIntosh led the team on 23 points with four rebounds.
Over on the Towson side, their year began at 9-5 overall (amid a couple of postponement breaks). The Tigers would then win eight of their next nine games—an OT loss to UNC Wilmington as the only blemish—before another loss to Northeastern.
Matched up against William & Mary on Thursday, the Tigers were down by two heading into the break. Towson posted a 42-25 run in the second for a 75-60 victory. Charles Thompson put up 18 points with 11 boards, and Jason Gibson had 17 points.
Towson is 3-10 ATS in their last 13 on Saturday and 6-2 ATS in their last eight after an ATS loss. The Tigers are 16-7 ATS in their last 23 overall.
Meanwhile, the Phoenix are 2-5 ATS in the last seven after a straight-up win and the under is 27-11 in their last 38 overall. The under is 20-6 in Elon’s last 26 road games.
PICK: I’m going to try Towson here. The Tigers have had some close calls over this 9-2 stretch, but overall the team is scoring pretty well. That said, the last time these teams met up back on January 15, Towson eked by with a defense-heavy 59-54 victory. The Tigers shot a tepid 40 percent from the field but managed a very important 14-of-18 from the line to get the win. I like this one to be a higher-scoring matchup, with Towson powering through a cover.
