The Texas-Rio Grande Valley Vaqueros and the California Baptist Lancers meet Tuesday in WAC Tournament college basketball action from Michelob ULTRA Arena. UTRGV is 8-22 on the year so far and coming off a loss to Stephen F. Austin. As for Cal Baptist, they’re 17-14 this year. The Lancers beat Lamar in their last game. UTRGV stared out on a decent 4-2 run this season, but they haven’t been able to win consecutive games since then. The Vaqueros are just 1-7 in the last eight games; after a win over Lamar, UTRGV fell to Stephen F. Austin in their last outing.
On Saturday versus Stephen F. Austin, the Vaqueros were drilled 24-42 in the first half. UTRGV hit a 39-51 run in the second for a 93-63 blowout loss. Tops in scoring was Justin Johnson on 20 points and eight rebounds.
Over on the Cal Baptist side, they hit a nice 10-3 start before skidding on a 2-8 run back in January/February. The Lancers are 5-3 in their last eight games, and they’ve won their last pair over Chicago State and Lamar.
Matched up against Lamar on Saturday, the Lancers were up 41-30 going into the second half. Cal Baptist kept up on a 37-36 run from there in a 78-66 win. Ty Rowell was the top scorer with 25 points and seven boards.
The Lancers are 5-0 ATS in their last five Tuesday games and 7-19 ATS in their last 26 after a straight-up win. The under is 6-1 in Cal Baptist’s last seven overall.
Meanwhile, the Vaqueros are 5-0-1 ATS in their last six after an ATS loss and 1-3-1 ATS in their last five overall. The under is 6-2 in UTRGV’s last eight overall.
PICK: I’m going with Cal Baptist here. The Lancers have had a few rough games in their last half-dozen outings or so, but generally they’ve been competitive with comparable teams. Cal Baptist has been at 62 points or below in two of the last three games though, so they’re going to need to get off to a fast start.
The last time these teams met up back on February 12, the Lancers pulled off an 80-72 win. This one will likely look similar, and I like Cal Baptist to power out the cover.
