The Furman Paladins and the Chattanooga Mocs meet Monday in Southern Conference Tournament college basketball action from US Cellular Center. Furman is 22-11 on the year. The Paladins beat Samford in tournament activity Sunday. As for Chattanooga, they’re sitting at 26-7 overall and coming off a win over Wofford on Sunday. Furman has had a couple of bad stretches this year, but overall they’ve stayed pretty consistent. The Paladins are 5-1 in their last six games, taking victories over Western Carolina, Wofford, the Citadel, Mercer and Samford.
In the Sunday tournament matchup versus Samford, Furman was down 27-35 heading into the break. The Paladins rebounded on a 44-33 run and took the 71-68 comeback victory. Jalen Slawson and Mike Bothwell each scored 17 points with a combined 11 boards.
Over on the Chattanooga side, they’ve lost consecutive games twice this year but otherwise they’ve remained a very consistent team. The Mocs are currently on a four-game win streak, taking out East Tennessee State, Samford, the Citadel and Wofford in that run.
In Sunday’s tourney matchup against Wofford, the Mocs hit a nice 38-20 run in the first half. Chattanooga cruised on a 41-36 run from there in a 79-56 victory. Tops in scoring was Malachi Smith’s double-double on 25 points with 11 boards.
Chattanooga is 6-1 ATS in the last seven Monday games and the under is 8-3 in their last 11 neutral-site games. Meanwhile, the Paladins are 1-5 ATS in their last six neutral-site games and 9-4-1 ATS in their last 14 Monday games.
PICK: I’m probably going to stay with Chattanooga here. The Mocs have been doing well offensively lately with 70 or more points in six straight games. In Sunday’s tournament matchup, Chattanooga didn’t have much trouble at any point. They’ve also won two of the last three games by double-digit margins.
As for Furman, they lost both matchups this year versus Chattanooga. The final scores were 71-69 and 64-58 though, so the Paladins were close in both. This should be a pretty close game and a fun one to watch.
