The Maryland Terrapins and the Michigan State Spartans meet Thursday in Big Ten Tournament college basketball action from Gainbridge Fieldhouse. Maryland is 15-16 on the year so far. As for Michigan State, they’re 20-11. This will be a rematch of Sunday’s game featuring these same teams. Michigan State won that one by 10 points. Maryland posted a pretty solid 8-4 run through their first 12 games this year, but they’ve only been able to post consecutive wins three times since then. After beating Ohio State and Minnesota, the Terrapins fell to Michigan State on Sunday.
Matched up against the Spartans, Maryland was drilled 26-46 in the first half. The Terrapins fought back on a 41-31 run from there but still lost 77-67. Eric Ayala was the top team scorer with 19 points and six rebounds.
Over on the Michigan State side, they were sitting at 17-4 back at the beginning of February. The Spartans have gone just 3-7 since then, though. Michigan State lost to Michigan and Ohio State in the pair of games before the win over Maryland.
In the Terrapins game back on Sunday, the Spartans shot 47.4 percent from the field with 39 rebounds and 21 team assists during the 77-67 win. Michigan State’s Malik Hall led the team with his 17 points and three rebounds.
The Spartans are 3-9-1 ATS in their last 13 neutral-site games and 2-5 ATS in their last seven after an ATS win. Michigan State is 3-8 ATS in the last 11 overall.
Meanwhile, the Terrapins are 4-10 ATS in their last 14 Thursday games and 5-2 ATS in their last seven overall. Maryland is 4-1 ATS in their last five after an ATS loss.
PICK: I’m going to try Maryland here. The Terrapins didn’t get very close during the 77-67 Sunday loss thanks to a bad first half, but they did well in the first meeting between these teams this year. Maryland fell 65-63 at home back on February 1 in that one. The Terrapins have played well lately against some stout teams, and if they get off to a good start here I think they can hang around. Should be a fun game regardless, though.
