The Omaha Mavericks and the North Texas Mean Green meet Saturday in college basketball action from UNT Coliseum. Omaha is sitting at 3-5 on the year. The Mavericks lost to Mississippi State in their last game. As for North Texas, they’re currently 5-2 and fresh off a loss to UNC Wilmington. Omaha went just 1-4 over their first five games this year, falling to Kansas, Nebraska, Ball State and Iowa (with a win over Idaho). The Mavericks would then beat LA-Monroe and Southern U before another loss to Mississippi State.

On Monday versus Mississippi State, the Mavericks went into halftime down 10 points. Omaha had another 10-point deficit in the second half and lost 74-54. Leading the scoring were Frankie Fidler and Tony Osburn, each with 10 points.

Over on the North Texas side, they went 5-1 over their first half-dozen outings this year. The loss came to Saint Mary’s 63-33; the wins were courtesy of SNU, Fresno State, Paul Quinn, San Jose State and Long Beach State.

In Sunday’s matchup versus UNC Wilmington, the Mean Green ended up with a 55-51 defeat. North Texas’ top scorer was Tylor Perry with 17 points and four rebounds. Kai Huntsberry added 15 points with six rebounds as well.

PICK: I’m probably going to stay with North Texas here. The Mean Green haven’t exactly dazzled on the scoreboard so far this season; they’ve hit 70 points or more just once (76 versus Paul Quinn). That said, North Texas is getting it done on the other side of the floor with 63 or fewer points allowed in every game so far. Omaha may have some trouble scoring, as the Mavericks have been at 64 points or fewer in four of their last five. This will probably be a lower-scoring, gritty matchup, and I like North Texas on the cover.
