Hampton had a difficult time against James Madison in their opener, The Pirates were down 57-19 by halftime and limped to a 106-58 loss. Game two against Regent VA was Hampton’s first win of the year. They took that one 89-60.

In Wednesday’s matchup versus East Carolina, Hampton got off to a 39-33 lead by the break. Hampton faded in the second half though, and lost 82-73. Russell Dean led the team on 23 points, three assists and four rebounds.

Over on the UC Santa Barbara side, they took on San Francisco State in their opener and powered out a 75-59 victory. In game two against Fresno State, UC Santa Barbara got another win, this time 61-54.

The Gauchos took their first loss to Northern Arizona back on Friday. UC Santa Barbara trailed 26-19 by halftime and lost 63-54. Tops in scoring was Ajay Mitchell with 18 points. Josh Pierre-louis added 17 points and three boards.

PICK: I’m going to try UC Santa Barbara, but probably staying away. I could see this matchup going either way. The Gauchos didn’t play particularly well versus Northern Arizona in their last outing, posting 31.9 percent shooting from the floor and 17.6 (3-of-17) from 3-point range. UC Santa Barbara is going to need to improve those numbers, and the good news is that Hampton should be a relatively easier matchup. Should be a competitive game, though.
