Stanford managed to stay out of major trouble in the early part of the year and were sitting at 14-8 back in early February. The Cardinal would then hit a 1-5 run with losses to UCLA, Oregon, Utah, Colorado and California, however.
On Thursday versus Arizona, the Cardinal had a 39-37 lead going into the second half. Stanford trailed 30-44 the rest of the way and lost 81-69. Leading the scoring was Spencer Jones on 22 points and five rebounds.
Over on the Arizona State side, they weren’t able to find much consistent traction until later in the year. The Sun Devils hit a 5-1 stretch in February with victories over Washington State, Oregon, Oregon State, Colorado and Utah in that time.
Matched up against California on Thursday, the Sun Devils posted 31 points in the first half. Arizona State hit a 40-19 run in the second for a nice 71-44 victory. DJ Horne posted 13 points, and Kimani Lawrence added 12 points and nine rebounds.
The Sun Devils are 5-1 ATS in their last six at home and 4-1 ATS in their last five after an ATS win. Arizona State is 6-0 ATS in their last six Saturday games.
Meanwhile, the Cardinal are 1-5 ATS in their last six after an ATS win and 1-8 ATS in their last nine Saturday games. The under is 6-2 in Stanford’s last eight road games.
PICK: I’m going to try Arizona State here. The Sun Devils are looking good over this 6-1 run, even if the scoring isn’t always there. Arizona State has hit 71 or more points in four of their last six games, but they’ve also been at 63 or below in three of the last seven.
The last time these teams saw each other back on January 22, Stanford took a tight 79-76 win at home. I like Arizona State to get some revenge in familiar surroundings here and pull off the cover. Should be a fun game.
