The South Carolina State Bulldogs and the College of Charleston Cougars meet Thursday in college basketball action from TD Arena. South Carolina State has played one game so far this year, an eight-point loss to East Carolina. As for the Cougars, they’re coming off a 9-10 overall record last year with a third-place CAA finish. South Carolina State had a forgettable campaign in 2020-21, going just 1-17 overall and 1-7 in Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference play. The Bulldogs finished in last place in the Southern Division; their lone victory came versus Florida A&M on February 27.
The Bulldogs got off to a rough start in their first game of the 2021-22 season, falling 70-62 against East Carolina. South Carolina State was outscored 42-34 in the first half and couldn’t get any closer from there. Leading scorer Cam Jones posted 15 points, nine rebounds and two assists.
Over on the College of Charleston side, they put up a 9-10 overall record last year but still managed a third-place finish in the Colonial Athletic Association with a 6-4 conference record. That effort left the Cougars behind only James Madison and Northeastern.
Charleston ended the regular season on a nice run, winning four of their final five games. In the first round of the Colonial Athletic Association Tournament, the Cougars would take an 80-75 loss at the hands of Drexel to finish off their season.
PICK: I’m going to try the Bulldogs here, but probably staying away. South Carolina State hasn’t started off the year too well. In the loss to ECU, the Bulldogs shot just 35.3 percent from the field—which oddly enough was better than the Pirates’ 32.4 percent. South Carolina State was edged in some other key categories however, like assists (7-12), turnovers (16-9) and fouls (21-15). If the Bulldogs can play a cleaner game here I can see them covering, but it’s tough to know how Charleston will respond without seeing them on the court first.
