The South Alabama Jaguars and the Georgia Southern Eagles meet Thursday in college basketball action from Hanner Fieldhouse. South Alabama is 15-6 on the year so far. The Jaguars lost to Troy in their last game. As for Georgia Southern, they’re 10-9 on the season and coming off a win over Louisiana. South Alabama started off the year at 9-2, then hit a 1-3 stretch with losses to Tarleton, UT Arlington and Appalachian State. After a five-game win streak, the Jaguars took another loss in a road game versus Troy over the weekend.
On Saturday versus the Trojans, the Jaguars posted just 22 points in the first half. South Alabama kept the pace from there but still lost 77-68. Both Charles Manning and Jay Jay Chandler scored 20 points apiece with a combined seven boards.
Over on the Georgia Southern side, they opened the year at 7-6 with losses to Wofford, Georgia Tech, Morehead State, Mercer, Little Rock and Arkansas State. It’s been a 3-3 run since with wins over UT Arlington, UL Monroe and Louisiana.
In the matchup versus the Cajuns on Saturday, the Eagles held a 32-29 edge at halftime and were able to hang on for the 66-65 victory. Elijah McCadden led the team with 21 bench points, two rebounds and four assists in 30 minutes of work.
The Eagles are 9-4-1 ATS in their last 14 Thursday games and 2-5 ATS in their last seven after an ATS win. Georgia Southern is 2-5 ATS in their last seven versus a team with a winning straight-up record.
Meanwhile, the Jaguars are 4-1 ATS in their last five after a straight-up loss and 4-1 ATS in their last five after an ATS loss. The over is 8-3 in South Alabama’s last 11 Thursday games.
PICK: I’m going to try South Alabama here. The Jaguars are coming off a tough road game versus Troy, but prior to that they’d been playing well. South Alabama has hit 68 points or more in each of the last five wins. The last time these teams met up back on January 15, South Alabama managed a 73-67 home win. Georgia Southern shot just 34.9 percent in that one, but the Eagles should do much better here. Still, it’s probably South Alabama’s cover to take if they play well themselves. Should be another good matchup.
