Alabama State had a 36-31 lead on Western Kentucky at halftime in their opener, but eventually fell 79-74. Leading scorer Trace Young put up 23 points with nine boards and one assist, while Juan Reyna added 16 bench points and a rebound.
In game two against Vanderbilt, the Hornets weren’t so effective. Alabama State fell behind 42-27 at halftime and ended up losing 91-72. Young again led the team with 11 points, one rebound and one assist. Jordan O’Neal came up with 10 points and five rebounds as well.
Over on the Missouri State side, they went 17-7 overall last year with a 12-6 mark in the Missouri Valley Conference. The Bears finished in third place in the standings, eventually falling to Drake in the MVC Tournament.
In their opener game against Southeast Missouri State, the Bears kept fighting the whole game but came up short in a 99-94 defeat. Gaige Prim was the top scorer with 28 points and 15 rebounds, while Donovan Clay added 20 points, four boards and two assists.
The Bears are 4-1 ATS in the last five at home and 7-2-2 ATS in the last 11 overall. Missouri State is 4-1-2 ATS in their last seven Saturday games.
Meanwhile, the Hornets are 4-1 ATS in their last five Saturday games and the over is 4-0 in their last four overall. The over is 4-0 in the Hornets’ last four road games.
PICK: I’m going to try Missouri State in this one. The Bears shot pretty well in their opener loss, posting a 51.7 percent rate from the field and hitting 25 of their 35 attempts from the line. SEMO was on a scorching pace on the other side though, shooting 57.1 percent from the field and 42.1 percent from 3-point range. Missouri State would have beaten a team that wasn’t shooting so hot.
As for Alabama State, they put up a solid effort in their opener but started to show some cracks against Vanderbilt. That said, I like the Hornets to hang around for most of the game before the Bears pull away on a cover.
