The Creighton Bluejays and the Oklahoma State Cowboys meet Thursday in college basketball action from Gallagher-Iba Arena. Creighton took their first loss of the year last Thursday versus Colorado State, dropping the Bluejays to 5-1 overall. As for Oklahoma State, they’re sitting at .500 on the season after a big win over Houston Christian last Friday. Let’s get into our Creighton vs. Oklahoma State prediction.
Creighton Bluejays
The Bluejays kicked off the season with a nice five-game win streak in a dominant run. Creighton took out Florida A&M, North Dakota State, Iowa, Texas Southern, and Loyola IL in that stretch. Now, they are 5-1 in the Big East, with the same number of wins as Butler, Georgetown, and Seton Hall. In their win over the Ramblers, the Bluejays shot a blistering 55.2 percent from the field and 51.9 percent from 3-point range in an 88-65 finish.
Creighton wasn’t able to keep it going in their latest outing versus Colorado State. The Bluejays limped to just 19 points in the first half and didn’t get any closer in an eventual 69-48 defeat. The only double-digit team scorers were Baylor Scheierman with 13 points and six boards, and Ryan Kalkbrenner with 12 points and seven rebounds.
Oklahoma State Cowboys
Over on the Cowboys’ side, they posted a rough 1-3 run to start the season. The losses in that time were versus Abilene Christian, St. Bonaventure, and Notre Dame—all coming by five points or fewer. Oklahoma State got back into the win column versus New Orleans in game five though, hitting a nice 58.1 percent from the field. The Cowboys are now at .500 in the Big 12, where six teams are still unbeaten, including their in-state rivals Oklahoma.
The Cowboys made it two in a row with another victory over Houston Christian in their last game. Oklahoma State posted a whopping 52 points in the first half and cruised to a 92-65 blowout. Leading the way was Mike Marsh with 14 points and five rebounds off the bench. Eric Dailey added 12 points, six rebounds and two assists as well.
OKLAHOMA STATE VS CREIGHTON PREDICTION
I’ll stick with Creighton. The Bluejays need a good bounce-back showing here, but I think they’ll get it. Creighton was destroyed by a very good Colorado team in their last outing, hitting just 27.9 percent from the floor and 20.7 percent (6-of-29) from 3-point range. The Bluejays had a 43-34 rebounding deficit as well in a pretty bad all-around outing. Still, Creighton is a good offensive team this year; they’ve hit 82 points in their five other games.
As for Oklahoma State, they’ve scored very well in their three wins (85 or more points) but not so well in their three losses (64 or fewer points). If Creighton can keep the Cowboys offense contained I don’t think Oklahoma State will score well enough to cover.
