The Marquette Golden Eagles and the Purdue Boilermakers meet Saturday in college basketball action from Mackey Arena in West Lafayette. Here’s a Purdue vs Marquette prediction. We will look at this from a betting perspective and determine the best Purdue vs Marquette pick.

Marquette Golden Eagles Betting Preview

The Golden Eagles have had a pretty choppy run so far this season, resulting in a .500 record overall. Marquette opened up the year at 3-1 with a loss to Indiana amid wins over Albany, Southern and Little Rock. Since then it’s been a 2-4 stretch with wins over only Central Michigan and Valparaiso. Otherwise the losses have come courtesy of Maryland, Dayton, Oklahoma and Valparaiso in that time. In total that gives the Golden Eagles a 5-5 record through their first 10 outings.

In last weekend’s matchup versus Wisconsin, the Golden Eagles faced a 12-point deficit at the break. Marquette was outscored 53-45 the rest of the way, giving the team a 96-76 loss. Adien Stevens led the team on 15 points while Chase ross added 12 points and three boards. Nigel James had 11 points with six rebounds and three assists in the losing effort as well.

Purdue Boilermakers Betting Preview

Over on the Purdue side, they kicked off the season with eight straight wins. The Boilermakers beat Evansville, Oakland, Alabama and Akron in their first four games. The next quartet were all wins over Memphis, Texas Tech, Eastern Illinois and Rutgers. Purdue took their first loss of the season last weekend versus Iowa State, giving the team an 8-1 overall run through the first nine outings.

On Wednesday versus Minnesota, the Boilermakers had a very modest three-point edge at the break. Purdue hit a 50-25 run the rest of the way however, leading to an 85-57 win in the end. Tops in scoring was Braden Smith with 15 points, 12 assists and six rebounds. Both Oscar Cluff (14 points; 11 rebounds) and Trey Kaufman-Renn (14 points; 10 rebounds) doubled up in the victory as well.

Why the Purdue Boilermakers will win

  • Purdue has won each of its last 24 day games at Mackey Arena against non-AP-ranked opponents.
  • Marquette has lost nine of its last 10 day games against the Big Ten Conference.
  • Purdue has won the first half in 23 of its last 24 day games at Mackey Arena against non-AP-ranked opponents.

Purdue vs Marquette Prediction

I’ll stick with Purdue. The Boilermakers started fairly slow in their win over Minnesota this week, but eventually hit 53.4 percent from the field with a 46-22 rebounding edge and just nine turnovers. Purdue held Minnesota to just 35.7 percent shooting on the other side and outscored the Gophers 40-24 in the paint. It was a nice bounce-back effort after a listless loss to Iowa State, where Purdue scored just 58 points. That gives the Boilermakers 80 or more points in all nine of their victories.

As for Marquette, they had a pretty rough showing in their latest outing versus a good Wisconsin team. The Eagles shot a reasonable 42 percent from the floor with just eight turnovers but also missed 10 of 19 free throws (47.4 percent) and got outmuscled on the boards 45-29 in the 20-point loss. The good news for Marquette is that they’ve got 71 or more points in every game so far this year. We’ll see how that translates against Purdue in Saturday’s matchup.
