The Lehigh Mountain Hawks and the Rutgers Scarlet Knights meet Wednesday in college basketball action from Louis Brown Athletic Center. Lehigh managed a 4-11 overall mark last season, finishing in third place in the Central Division of the Patriot League. As for Rutgers, they put up a 16-12 overall mark last year and made it all the way to the Second Round of the NCAA Tournament. Lehigh had a forgettable season in 2020-21, finishing at 4-11 overall and 4-10 in Patriot League play. That effort led the Hawks to a third (last) place finish in the Patriot League’s amended Central Division behind both Lafayette and Bucknell.

Lehigh had a handful of games postponed and/or cancelled last year, so it was difficult to find a rhythm. The Hawks would win consecutive games just once all season. In the Patriot League Tournament, Lehigh fell 69-58 to Boston University to end their season.

Over on the Rutgers side, they held their own fairly well in a highly competitive Big Ten Conference last season. The Knights were 16-12 overall and 10-10 in conference play, giving the team a respectable seventh-place finish in the standings.

The Knights skidded to a 3-4 finish over their last seven games before taking out Indiana 61-50 in the Big Ten Tournament. Rutgers would fall to Illinois in the next game, but earned an invite to the NCAA Tournament where they took out Clemson. The Scarlet Knights fell to Houston 63-60 in the Second Round, however.

PICK: I’m going to stick with Rutgers. The Knights look pretty good experience-wise heading into this season. They’ve got a nice core of Caleb McConnell, Paul Mulcahy, Geo Baker and Ron Harper—that group has played together for three years, developing chemistry along the way. There’s a bit of depth concern in the front court, but if Rutgers stays healthy they should be fine. I like the Knights to put together another respectable Big Ten showing this season, starting here.
