The Nevada Wolf Pack and the San Diego State Aztecs meet Saturday in college basketball action from Viejas Arena. Here’s a San Diego State vs Nevada prediction. We will look at this from a betting perspective and determine the best San Diego State vs Nevada pick.
Nevada Wolf Pack Betting Preview
It’s been quite the choppy and eventful season for the Wolf Pack so far, but they’ve managed to stay a couple games above the .500 mark overall. Nevada kicked things off on an 8-3 run with losses to only Vanderbilt, Washington State and Loyola Marymount. After losses to Colorado State, Wyoming, Utah State and New Mexico, the Wolf Pack beat Fresno State, Air Force and San Jose State ahead of three more losses to Utah State, San Diego State and Boise State. Nevada would hit a win streak over UNLV, Air Force, Fresno State and San Jose State from there, but since then it’s been a 1-4 run. The lone win was over Wyoming; otherwise it’s been losses to Colorado State, Boise State, UNLV and New Mexico in that time. That gives the Wolf Pack a 16-14 overall record across 30 games this season so far.
In the New Mexico home matchup on Tuesday, the Wolf Pack entered the second half with a 41-38 deficit. Nevada didn’t get any closer than that on a 30-29 deficit and took the loss in the end with a 71-67 tally. Both Nick Davidson (seven rebounds; two assists; one block) and Kobe Sanders (six rebounds; six assists; two steals; two blocks) led the team with 15 points each. The only other player on the Nevada roster to reach double-figures was Tyler Rolison with 12 points, three rebounds, six assists and one steal in 39 minutes of work in the loss.
San Diego State Aztecs Betting Preview
Over on the San Diego State side, they’ve been quite steady all year and haven’t lost consecutive games yet. The Aztecs hit a shaky 3-2 run out of the gate, then steeled themselves on wins over Houston, Fresno State, San Diego, Cal Baptist and California over the next five. A 3-3 run came next with wins over Boise State, Air Force and Colorado State among losses to Utah State, New Mexico and UNLV. San Diego State would win seven of the next eight, taking out Air Force, Nevada, San Jose State, Wyoming, San Jose State, Boise State and Fresno State in succession with a lone loss to Colorado State. It’s been a 2-2 run since then with losses to Utah State and UNLV bookending wins over New Mexico and Wyoming. That gives the Aztecs a 20-8 record in 28 games so far this season.
Matched up on the road versus UNLV, the Aztecs maintained a slim 34-32 edge at halftime. San Diego State was outscored 42-33 the rest of the way however, ending with a 74-67 defeat. Top scorer Nick Boyd paced the team on 19 points with four rebounds and three assists. Miles Byrd managed to double up on 15 points with 10 rebounds, six assists, four steals and three blocks. Both Milies Heide (one steal) and BJ Davis (three rebounds; three assists) chipped in with 10 points apiece during the defeat as well.
Why the San Diego State Aztecs will win
- San Diego State has won each of its last 10 night games at Viejas Arena against non-AP-ranked opponents.
- Nevada has lost four of its last five games.
- San Diego State has won the first half in each of its last nine night games against Nevada.
San Diego State vs Nevada Prediction
I’ll just stick with San Diego State here. The Aztecs will be happy to get home after a bad second half in a listless loss to UNLV this week. SDSU shot just 40 percent from the field, 24.1 percent (7-of-29) from outside and 60 percent (12-of-20) from the line in that one, but stayed relatively competitive in most other statistical areas. Three of San Diego State’s last four games have been on the road, and they’ve lost two of those.
Back on January 25 when these teams last met up, the Aztecs took a 69-50 road win. San Diego State should have the advantage again in the rematch, so long as they can harness some of that home energy.
