The Appalachian State Mountaineers and the South Alabama Jaguars meet Saturday in college basketball action from Mitchell Center. Appalachian State is fresh off a Thursday game versus LA-Monroe. In that one the Mountaineers powered out a seven-point victory. As for South Alabama, they took on Troy in their Thursday outing. The Jaguars ended up losing by four points there. Appalachian State Mountaineers
Appalachian State opened up the year on a 9-9 stretch across their first 18 games. The Mountaineers went 4-3 in the next seven outings, beating Troy, Old Dominion, Georgia State and Arkansas State in that time.
In the LA-Monroe matchup on Thursday, Appalachian State was up 31-19 by halftime. The Mountaineers were outscored 26-21 in the second but still won 52-45. The team’s only double-digit scorer was CJ Huntley on 11 points and five rebounds.
South Alabama Jaguars
Over on the South Alabama side, they were 7-9 at the 16-game mark this season. The Jaguars went 4-4 over their next eight with victories over James Madison, Troy, Arkansas State and LA-Monroe alongside losses to Louisiana, Southern Miss, Coastal Carolina and Old Dominion.
Matched up against Troy on Thursday, the Jaguars took a 34-27 edge into the second half. South Alabama faced a 34-23 deficit from there however and lost 61-57. Leading scorer Judah Brown put up 16 points with eight rebounds in the defeat.

I’ll probably stick with South Alabama in this one. The Jaguars need to rebound from a tepid offensive effort against Troy on Thursday, though. South Alabama had previously hit 72 or more points in six of seven games, so they’ve certainly got a capable scoring group. As for Appalachian State, they’ve been a mixed bag over this current 1-2 stretch, and they’ve scored 63 or fewer points in four straight games. This is probably going to be a close one, but I like South Alabama to ultimately power out the cover.
