The South Alabama Jaguars and the Texas-Arlington Mavericks meet Thursday in college basketball action from College Park Center. South Alabama is 10-3 so far this year. The Jaguars are fresh off a win over SIU-Edwardsville. As for the Mavericks, they’re 4-7 so far and beat Howard Payne in their last game. South Alabama managed a nice 9-2 run over their first 11 games, falling to only Wichita State and Alabama along the way. The Jaguars lost to Tarleton State in a stunner, then bounced back with a win over SIU-Edwardsville in their last game.
In the SIU-Edwardsville matchup, the Jaguars scored 49 points in the first half and 35 more in the second on the way to an 84-69 win. Jay Jay Chandler was the top scorer with 22 points, and Javon Franklin added 14 points and nine boards.
Over on the Texas-Arlington side, they went 3-5 over their first eight, taking out Mary Hardin-Baylor, UCSB and Lamar along the way. After losses to Oral Roberts and Oklahoma, TX-Arlington managed to beat Howard Payne.
Matched up against Howard Payne, the Mavericks jumped out to a 59-14 lead after one half and cruised to the 95-46 blowout win. Shemar Wilson was the leading scorer in that one with 14 points, eight rebounds and one assist in 19 minutes.
The Mavericks are 2-6 ATS in their last eight home games and 8-20 ATS in their last 28 overall. Texas-Arlington is 2-5 ATS in their last seven Thursday games.
Meanwhile, the Jags are 4-1 ATS in their last five overall and 8-3 ATS in the last 11 road games. The over is 5-1 in South Alabama’s last six overall.
PICK: I’m going to stick with South Alabama. The Jaguars have been on a great run lately—outside of the ugly loss to Tarleton State, that is. Otherwise they’ve scored well with 68 or more points in nine of their last 10 outings.
As for TX-Arlington, they had a nice game versus Howard Payne in their last game but overall just haven’t been a very dynamic offensive team. If South Alabama plays well at all here the cover/win shouldn’t be an issue.
