The Appalachian State Mountaineers and the Texas State Bobcats meet Thursday in college basketball action from Strahan Coliseum. Appalachian State is sitting at 14-9 so far. The Mountaineers took out Little Rock in their last outing. As for Texas State, they’re 13-6 and coming off a win over UT Arlington. App State stumbled in their first 14 games, hitting a 6-8 record. The Mountaineers have gone 8-1 since then with wins over UL Monroe, South Alabama, Coastal Carolina (twice), Georgia State, Georgia Southern, Arkansas State and Little Rock.
Matched up against Little Rock on Saturday, the Mountaineers posted 35 points in the first half and 37 more from there in a 72-57 win. Tops in scoring for App State was Donovan Gregory on 23 points, five rebounds and two assists.
Over on the Texas State side, they managed a 9-4 run before a two-week postponement break in early January. The Bobcats have gone 4-2 since then—and 1-2 in their last three games. After losses to Arkansas State and UT Arlington, the Bobcats took out the Mavericks over the weekend.
On Saturday versus UT Arlington, the Bobcats were down by three points at halftime. Texas State hit a 32-24 run in the second on the way to a 58-53 comeback victory. The only double-digit scorer on the team was Caleb Asberry on 15 points and four boards.
The Bobcats are 7-2 ATS in their last nine Thursday games and 1-4 ATS in the last five overall. The under is 3-0-1 in Texas State’s last four overall.
Meanwhile, App State is 3-7 ATS in their last 10 Thursday games and 4-1 ATS in the last five road games. The Mountaineers are 5-0 ATS in their last five overall.
PICK: I’m going with App State here. This one should be a pretty fun matchup, though. The Mountaineers are on a nice run over the last six games, but they’ve been over 61 points just three times during that stretch. As for Texas State, they’ve been at 60 points or below in each of their last three games. The Bobcats are decent scorers this year when the matchup is right however, and I like a solid total here. Ultimately I like App State better on the cover, though.
