The SMU Mustangs and the Tulane Green Wave meet Wednesday in college basketball action from Devlin Fieldhouse. SMU is 8-14 so far this year. The Mustangs beat South Florida in their last outing. SMU Mustangs

SMU started out the year on a sketchy 6-10 run with wins over Texas A&M-Commerce, Evansville, Lamar, Iona, Utah State and Tulsa. The Mustangs are 2-4 since then with wins over Tulsa and South Florida. 

On Sunday versus South Florida, the Mustangs were up 45-33 going into the second half. SMU was outscored 47-37 from there but still held on for the win 82-80. Zhuric Phelps was the leading scorer on 17 points and seven assists. 

Tulane Green Wave

Over on the Tulane side, they lost to Nevada, Western Kentucky, Fordham, George Mason and Cincinnati in their first 15 games. The Wave are 3-2 in their last five outings with wins over SMU, UCF and Wichita State. 

Matched up against Wichita State last Wednesday, the Wave scored 35 points in the first half, 39 in the second and 21 in overtime for a 95-90 victory. Jaylen Forbes was the leading team scorer on 25 points, and Jalen Cook added 20 points with nine boards.

I’ll stick with Tulane here. The Green Wave had a wild outing in their comeback overtime win over Wichita State last week, storming back from a 13-point halftime deficit for the victory. Tulane was able to get a 97-88 victory at SMU Moody Coliseum the last time these teams met up back on January 11. The Wave have hit 77 or more points in nine of their last 10 games this year, so if they can get off to a good start in this one I don’t see SMU keeping up.
