The Kansas Jayhawks and the West Virginia Mountaineers meet Saturday in college basketball action from WVU Coliseum in Morgantown. Here’s a West Virginia vs Kansas prediction. We will look at this from a betting perspective and determine the best West Virginia vs Kansas pick.

Kansas Jayhawks Betting Preview

The Jayhawks opened the season on a pretty good 6-2 run. The only losses in that time came versus North Carolina and Duke. A 7-1 run came next with a lone loss to UConn amid wins over Notre Dame, Syracuse, Tennessee, Missouri, NC State, Towson and Davidson. Following another loss to UCF, the Jayhawks were able to topple TCU in their last outing. That gives Kansas an 11-4 run over the first 15 games of the season.

In the TCU game on Tuesday, Kansas exited the first half with a 41-36 edge. The Jayhawks dropped that advantage on a 51-46 run in the second and had to go to overtime to settle an eventual 104-100 win in the end. Darryn Peterson was tops on the team with 32 points and six rebounds in the victory while Tre White added 22 points with five boards. Melvin Council had 18 points with six rebounds and eight assists as well.

West Virginia Mountaineers Betting Preview

Over on the West Virginia side, they were able to win their first five games of the season, but the next pair were both losses to Clemson and Xavier. The Mountaineers have since gone 5-3 with wins over Mercyhurst, Coppin State, Little Rock, Mississippi Valley State and Cincinnati. The losses were to Wake Forest, Ohio State and Iowa State, giving the Mountaineers a 10-5 record over the first 15 games this year.

Matched up against Cincinnati this week, the Mountaineers went into the locker room clinging to a 31-28 edge. West Virginia kept the pace from there pretty well and walked away with a close 62-60 win. The team’s leading scorer was Honor Huff with 24 points and eight boards. Chance Moore added 14 points with four rebounds and Treysen Eaglestaff had 10 points with seven rebounds in the win.

Why the West Virginia Mountaineers will win

  • West Virginia has won each of its last 13 games at Hope Coliseum.
  • Kansas has lost five of its last six road games as an AP-ranked team against a non-AP-ranked team.
  • West Virginia has won the first half in each of its last 15 games at Hope Coliseum.

Why the Kansas Jayhawks will win

  • Kansas has won 10 of its last 11 games against non-AP-ranked opponents.
  • West Virginia has lost each of its last four games against AP-ranked opponents.
  • West Virginia has lost the first half in each of its last four games against AP-ranked opponents.

West Virginia vs Kansas Prediction

I’ll take a stab on Kansas but this one’s a coin flip. The Jayhawks were eventually able to take care of a stubborn TCU team at home this week, shooting 52.4 percent from the field and 30-of-40 (75 percent) from the line. The Jayhawks did get out-rebounded 40-36 and had 13 turnovers but also held a 46-38 edge on points in the paint. Kansas is 5-1 in their last six outings and they’re scoring pretty well in that time with 73 or more points in every game.

As for West Virginia, they did a good job on defense versus Cincinnati in their latest win, holding the Bearcats to just 35.5 percent shooting from the field. The Mountaineers posted 45.8 percent themselves with a nice 11-of-23 (47.8 percent) from 3-point range. The 15 turnovers didn’t help matters, though. WVU is just 3-3 over their last six games, alternating wins with losses. They’ve begun a tough little stretch in the schedule but playing at home will certainly help here.
