The Appalachian State Mountaineers meet the Louisiana-Monroe Warhawks Saturday in week 9 Sun Belt college football action from Kidd Brewer Stadium. LA-Monroe is coming off a matchup versus South Alabama. In that one the Warhawks won by 10 points. As for App State, they played Coastal Carolina last Wednesday. The Mountaineers pulled off a thrilling three-point win in that game. Check back all season long for free college football picks at Sports Chat Place.
UL-Monroe went 3-3 over their first six games of the 2021 season. The victories came 12-7 over Jackson State, 29-16 over Troy and 31-28 over Liberty. The losses were to Kentucky 45-10, Coastal Carolina 59-6 and Georgia State 55-21.
In last Saturday’s matchup versus South Alabama, the Warhawks scored 31 points across the second and third quarters en route to a 41-31 win. QB Chandler Rogers finished with 369 yards and four scores, and Andrew Henry rushed for 88 yards and a TD of his own.
Over on the App State side, they went 4-2 over their first six with wins over East Carolina, Elon, Marshall and Georgia State. The Mountaineers’ losses in that stretch were to Miami-FL 25-23 and Louisiana 41-13.
Last Wednesday versus Coastal Carolina, the Mountaineers pulled off an excellent upset win 30-27. App State was down 14-0 after the first quarter but then found their rhythm. QB Chase Brice finished on 347 yards with two scores, and Camerun Peoples posted 58 yards and two rush scores.
ULM is 3-1-1 ATS versus a team with a winning record and 2-5-1 ATS in their last eight overall. The Warhawks are also 8-22-1 ATS in their last 31 in October.
Meanwhile, the Mountaineers are 3-7 ATS in their last 10 conference games and 3-7 ATS in their last 10 after a straight-up win. App State is also 1-5 ATS versus a team with a winning record.
PICK: I’m going to go with App State. The Mountaineers have been quite impressive this season, with just one loss coming by more than two points. Appalachian State notched 575 total yards against a great Chanticleers team in their last outing, averaging 8.3 yards per play and posting 22 first downs.
As for the Warhawks, they put up a nice offensive effort last weekend with 555 yards, a 7.6-yard average and 25 first downs. South Alabama finished with 409 total yards, but shot themselves in the foot with three turnovers as well. I like this game to be another high-scoring outing, with App State eventually taking the cover.
