Cal Poly managed to play just three games in the spring, and things didn’t go so well. The Mustangs went winless at 0-3, finishing last in the standings and opting out of the remainder of the season in late March.
In their opener versus San Diego, the Mustangs scored 14 points in the fourth quarter on the way to a 28-17 win. QB Spencer Brasch put up 318 yards with two touchdowns, and Michael Briscoe had 83 yards from three catches to lead the receivers.
Over on the Bulldogs’ side, they put up a 3-3 record last season amid a handful of cancellations. Fresno State landed in sixth place in the Mountain West Conference standings. After a 3-1 start, the Bulldogs lost their last two games to Nevada and New Mexico.
In their first game of the year versus Oregon, Fresno State tied the game heading into the fourth quarter but ultimately fell 31-24. Jake Haener passed for 298 yards with one TD, and Keric Wheatfall led the receivers on 76 yards from five grabs.
PICK: I’m going to stick with Fresno State. The Bulldogs couldn’t get much going on the ground in their opener, notching just 75 rush yards and one score there. Fresno State also lost three fumbles and committed eight penalties to shoot themselves in the proverbial foot.
As for Cal Poly, their running game wasn’t great either, but the 318 pass yards made up for it. I like the Mustangs to hang around in this one, but if Fresno State can clean up their mistakes a bit the Bulldogs should be able to cover.
