LA-Monroe kicked off their year with a loss to Texas 52-10, then a blowout win of their own 35-7 over Nicholls State. The Warhawks fell big to Alabama 63-7, then took out Louisiana 21-17. Game five was a 45-28 loss to Arkansas State.
In the Coastal Carolina game, the Warhawks were down 28-14 at halftime. LA-Monroe got better from there but still lost 28-21. QB Chandler Rogers managed 279 yards with two scores, and Malik Jackson added 52 rush yards and a TD on 12 carries.
Over on the South Alabama side, they won their first pair of games 48-7 over Nicholls State and 38-24 over Central Michigan. The Jaguars had a near-miss loss 32-31 to UCLA, then rebounded in game four with a 38-14 victory over Louisiana Tech.
In their fifth outing of the year, the Jaguars took on Louisiana. South Alabama outscored the Cajuns 13-10 in the second half on the way to a 20-17 win. QB Carter Bradley finished with 245 yards and a pick, while La’Damian Webb led the rush with 75 yards and a score.
PICK: I’m probably staying with South Alabama. The Jaguars have been quite impressive so far this year, with just the lone one-point loss to UCLA in the record books. South Alabama had a fairly tepid offensive game against Louisiana (361 yards; two turnovers; eight penalties) but still found a way to win with great defense.
As for LA-Monroe, they nearly clawed back against a good Coastal Carolina team in their last outing, finishing with 424 total yards, 24 first downs and two lost fumbles. I like the Warhawks to hang around in this one and make it interesting, but I think South Alabama will eventually cover.
