The Appalachian State Mountaineers and the Wyoming Cowboys meet Saturday in college football action from War Memorial Stadium. App State is coming off a matchup versus East Carolina. The Mountaineers ended up moving to 2-1 on the year with a 15-point victory. As for Wyoming, they played Texas in their third game of the season. In that one the Cowboys lost by 21 points. Appalachian State Mountaineers 

The Mountaineers’ season kicked off with a game versus Gardner-Webb back on September 2. Appalachian State scored in every quarter during that game, posting 394 total yards (244 passing) in a 45-24 win. Game two was a tougher matchup versus North Carolina. The Mountaineers played a great game but fell short in double overtime 40-34. 

In the matchup versus East Carolina, the Mountaineers turned a 21-16 halftime deficit into a 43-28 win thanks to 20 third-quarter points. Joey Aguilar posted 241 yards with three touchdowns and an interception. Nate Noel led the rush with his 178 yards and a score off 26 carries. Kaedin Robinson had 57 yards and a TD off four catches to pace the receivers.

Wyoming wasn’t great offensively with a tepid 320 total yards (149 passing) but still got the W. Game two went a little smoother for the Cowboys in a 31-17 win over Portland State. Wyoming generated 371 yards (201 passing) there in an improved offensive effort, but still had two turnovers. 

Matched up against Texas last weekend, Wyoming took their first loss of the season with a 31-10 result. The Cowboys were outscored 21-0 in the final quarter but held strong initially. QB Evan Svoboda had 136 yards with an interception, and Harrison Waylee put up 110 yards with a touchdown on 18 carries.

I’m staying with Appalachian State. This year’s Mountaineers squad can play with just about anybody, as evidenced by taking a very good North Carolina team to the wire in game two. App State had an easier-on-paper matchup versus East Carolina last weekend, and the Mountaineers started out pretty slow but eventually managed 465 total yards (224 rushing) in a pretty nice win. App State held ECU to 240 total yards (79 rushing), 3.9 yards per play and 14 first downs while also bagging three picks. There are a few things to clean up, but if the Mountaineers play like they did in the second half last weekend, they’ll be able to keep a cover pace (and maybe win) against Wyoming.
