The PGA Tour’s 2021 Farmers Insurance Open begins this Thursday!
For any golf bettor, the task of locating good longshot bets on any given week is never easy. However, in my opinion, there is always a path to success if you work hard enough. For this week, the first step in my research process was reviewing the odds of previous winners of the Farmers Insurance Open. My goal in doing so was to look for key trends that could lead me to success in identifying golfers to place longshot bets on for the 2021 Farmers Insurance Open.
Here is a list of the last seven winners of the Farmers Insurance Open and that golfer’s opening odds the week they won the event:
2014 Scott Stallings +25000
2015 Jason Day +1400
2016 Brandt Snedeker +1800
2017 Jon Rahm +5500
2018 Jason Day +2200
2019 Justin Rose +1400
2020 Marc Leishman +5500
What can we take away from reviewing the last seven champions of this tournament? Well, if my math is correct, since 2014, the average opening odds of the winner of the Farmers Insurance Open was +6100. Secondly, my review of the previous champions indicates that players from Australia have won three of the last seven events at Torrey Pines.
Now that I have presented some interesting key trends that I felt were of note to the golf bettor, let’s turn our attention to my favorite longshot bets for this week’s Farmers Insurance Open!
Here is a golfer to consider putting on your card to finish in the top 10 this week at higher odds.
Cameron Davis +550 - The 25 year old Australian has four top 15 finishes in his last ten events played on the PGA Tour, including an impressive third place result at last week's American Express. In relation to this week’s current listed 2021 Farmers Insurance Open field, in the last 24 rounds played on the PGA Tour, Davis ranks ninth in strokes gained off the tee, 17th in strokes gained ball striking, sixth in birdie or better percentage, and 16th in driving distance. My gut tells me Davis has a real chance to contend for a win this week.
Here is a golfer to consider placing on your card to finish in the top 20 this week at higher odds.
John Huh +350 - The American arrives at this week's PGA Tour event in good form. Let's take a look at the relevant data. Huh has four top 21 finishes in his last five events played on the PGA Tour, including a 12th place result at the RSM Classic. I also like the fact that Huh has performed well at this week's event in the past. Huh has played the Farmers Insurance Open every year since 2016. In those five tournaments just mentioned, Huh has two top 25 finishes, including an eighth place result at the 2016 Farmers Insurance Open.
