The Minnesota Twins and Kansas City Royals will take the field for game one on Friday night.
The Twins just took two of three from the Toronto Blue Jays and have won five of their last six games overall. During this stretch, the bats have woken up for the Twins as they’ve scored seven or more runs in four of those six games. Brian Dozier has five homeruns and Chris Colabello has 19 RBI. The Twins may need that type of run support with Ricky Nolasco on the mound, a pitcher who’s 1-1 this season with a 5.50 ERA. Nolasco has allowed 11 runs in 18 innings, and is 1-0 with a 1.13 ERA in one career start against the Royals.
USA TODAY Sports
The Royals are coming off of a sweep over the Houston Astros and are .500 for the first time since being 4-4. The Royals pitching staff allowed just seven runs in those three games, which was a major improvement over what they were giving up before the Astros series. Taking the mound on Friday will be one of the Royals more consistent pitchers in Jason Vargas, who is 1-0 on the year with a 1.64 ERA. Vargas has 12 strikeouts in 22 innings, and is 2-3 with a 4.92 ERA in nine career starts against the Twins.
The Twins are 1-5 in their last 6 during game 1 of a series and 5-0 in their last 5 vs. American League Central. The Royals are 0-4 in their last 4 vs. American League Central and 15-6 in their last 21 home games. The Twins are 2-8 in the last 10 meetings in Kansas City and 8-18 in the last 26 meetings overall.
This game comes down to whether of not the Royals can score, as they're 7-0 when scoring four or more runs, but 0-7 when scoring three or less. Given the fact it's Nolasco on the mound, I like the Royals quite a bit in this matchup. Take Kansas City as long as the price is worth it.
