The Nationals and Mets play the rubber match of their three game set in NL East action on Thursday afternoon from the nation's capital.
The New York Mets won in a rout on Tuesday night, but on Wednesday the tables were turned as the Mets lost 7-1. New York starter Jonathon Niese was belted for six runs on eight hits over six innings of work conceding five of those runs on home runs. The Mets could only muster eight singles on the night, only converting the scattered output into a single run. New York is just 9-10 in the second half of the season and their chances of reaching the postseason have realistically dried up.

The Mets will look to play spoiler against a divisional foe and win the series as they send promising rookie Jacob deGrom to the mound for his 16th start of the season. deGrom has been working deep into ball games of late, lasting seven or more innings in four of his last five starts. All five of those starts have ended up as wins as the young righty owns an ultra-impressive 1.04 ERA in his last five outings. For the season deGrom has a WHIP of 1.22 and ERA of 2.77 to go along with a record of 6-5; he has yet to face the Nationals this year.
The Mets are 26-33 on the road this season.
The Washington Nationals bounced back in dominant fashion on Wednesday night as Doug Fister continued his impressive stretch picking up his 11th win after pitching 7.1 innings of one run ball, Adam LaRoche hit two home runs and had three RBI’s, and Danny Espinosa hit a three run home run. The Nationals have now built a four game cushion in the NL East as the Braves have begun to slip behind in the division.
Washington will look to further separate themselves in Thursday’s finale as they send righty Jordan Zimmerman to the mound. Zimmerman is coming off a seven inning shutout in his last start against the Phillies, and he has also been impressive at home this year with a 2.62 ERA. For the season Zimmerman has a WHIP of 1.17 and ERA of 3.00 to go along with a 7-5 record. Several key players on the Mets have had success against Zimmerman, including David Wright hitting .306 and Daniel Murphy hitting .317 against him. Zimmerman won his only start against the Mets this year on May 18th allowing three runs on eight hits over six innings of work.
The Nationals are 33-24 on their home field this season.
The Nationals are the better team and the home team, but at this price it’s worth a punt on the visitor given deGrom’s recent form.
