Los Angeles Angels vs. Seattle Mariners – 8/31/20 MLB Pick, Odds, and Prediction

2020-08-31 16:10:00 EDT

The Seattle Mariners and the Los Angeles Angels meet Monday in MLB action from Angel Stadium.

This will be the fourth and final matchup between these teams in this series. The Angels won Friday 3-2 and Saturday 16-3. In the Sunday game three, we had a tense defensive battle as the game stretched to 10 innings. When the dust settled, Seattle emerged with a tight 2-1 win to gain a chance at potentially tying the series on Monday. The Mariners out-hit Los Angeles 8-5 in the Sunday game, but didn’t have much offense to show for it. Kyle Lewis managed a solo homer with two runs, and starting pitcher Justin Dunn went 6.0 innings with four walks, no earned and six strikeouts.

For the Monday starting pitcher, Seattle will go with left-hander Marco Gonzales. This season, Gonzales is 3-2 in six starts with a 3.63 ERA and 31 strikeouts in 34.2 innings of work. Across his MLB career, Gonzales is 37-27 with a 4.20 ERA and 387 Ks in 481.2 innings.

Over on the Angels’ side, they got a great start out of Griffin Canning on Sunday, but couldn’t get him the win due to some tepid offense. Canning went 8.0 innings with four hits and one earned run with one walk and seven strikeouts in a no-decision. Albert Pujols led the hitters with one run and a 2-for-4 afternoon.

For the Monday starter, the Angels will send Jaime Barria to the mound. In two games without a decision this season, Barria holds a 2.89 ERA with eight strikeouts in 9.1 innings. On his MLB career, Barria is 14-19 with a 4.51 ERA and 181 Ks in 221.1 innings.

The Mariners are 29-61 in the last 90 road games and 27-58 in their last 85 games as a road underdog. Seattle is 26-59 in the last 85 versus the American League West and 3-7 in their last 10 road games versus a right-handed starter.

Meanwhile, the Angels are 4-1 in their last five games as a home favorite and 4-1 in their last five home games versus a left-handed starter. Los Angeles is 21-48 in their last 69 overall and 2-7 in their last nine Monday games.

Pick: I’m leaning Seattle here. I do think Barria will have a solid game, though. He gave up just one run over five innings in his last appearance, a long relief outing versus the Astros. That said, Gonzales has already beaten the Angels twice this season, and has allowed six hits and five runs (three earned) in 13.3 innings during those appearances. If Gonzales is hitting his spots early in this one, it could be a long afternoon for the Angels.
