Philadelphia Phillies vs. New York Mets – 9/16/20 MLB Pick, Odds, and Prediction

2020-09-16 19:05:00 EDT

The New York Mets and the Philadelphia Phillies meet Wednesday in MLB action from Citizens Bank Park.

This will be the second installment of a three-game series between these teams this week. In the opener on Tuesday, the Phillies scored two runs in the fourth inning and two more in the fifth on the way to a 4-1 victory. The Mets out-hit Philadelphia 11-6 in the loss on Tuesday, but could only come up with one run for their efforts. Jeff McNeil was the top offensive player there, with a 3-for-4 evening. Starting pitcher Rick Porcello took the loss on 6.0 innings, six hits, four earned and two walks.

For the Wednesday starting pitcher role, New York is going with Jacob deGrom on the mound. In his nine starts this year, deGrom is 4-1 with a 1.67 ERA and 79 strikeouts in 54.0 innings of work. Over his MLB career deGrom is 70-50 with a 2.58 ERA and 1334 Ks in 1155.2 innings total.

Over on the Phillies’ side, Tuesday starter Jake Arrieta moved to .500 on the season with the victory, going 5.1 innings with eight hits and one earned run. Didi Gregorius posted his eighth home runs of the season as well, a two-run shot in the fifth inning.

The Phillies will be sending out Zach Wheeler in the starting pitcher slot on Wednesday. Wheeler is 4-0 in eight starts this season with a 2.47 ERA and 36 strikeouts in 51.0 innings. Over his MLB career Wheeler is 48-38 with a 3.69 ERA and 762 Ks in 800.1 innings.

The Mets are 13-3 in their last 16 Wednesday games and 4-1 in their last five games versus a right-handed starter. New York is 2-5 in their last seven games as a road favorite and 2-6 in their last eight road games.

Meanwhile, the Phillies are 6-1 in their last seven home games and 32-66 in their last 98 games as a home underdog Philly is 1-4 in the last four overall and 1-4 in their last five versus the National League East.

Pick: I’m going to stick with the Mets here. And with deGrom on the mound, picking New York isn’t unreasonable against any opponent. In his most recent outing, deGrom had a strong showing, and he’s probably the favorite for his third straight National League Cy Young Award. I like deGrom to keep his charmed season going and put the Mets in a great spot in this one. Wheeler should once again be great on the other side, but New York should have some opportunities against the bullpen and can tough out a win that way.
