The Atlanta Braves and the Philadelphia Phillies meet in an NL East division matchup in MLB action from Citizens Bank Park on Saturday afternoon.
The Atlanta Braves will look to rebound from a 3-2 loss in 10 innings on opening day last time out. Pablo Sandoval led the Braves with a two-run home run in the 7th inning while Ronald Acuna Jr. went 2 for 4 with a double. Cristian Pache added a double as well while Marcell Ozuna, Austin Riley and Travis d’Arnaud each had a base hit to finish off the offense for Atlanta in the loss. Max Fried allowed two earned runs on six hits with eight strikeouts over five innings of work, not factoring in the decision. Nate Jones ended up taking the loss in extra innings, giving up the game-winning run. Charlie Morton will start here and was 2-2 with a 4.74 ERA for Tampa Bay last season. In his career, Morton is 2-3 with a 6.17 ERA and 36 strikeouts against the Phillies.
The Philadelphia Phillies will try to build on their win over the Braves on opening day. J.T. Realmuto had a double and an RBI while Jean Segura went 2 for 5 at the dish with an RBI and Alec Bohm chipped in an RBI as well for the Phils in the win. Rhys Hoskins contributed a double while Bryce Harper, Andrew McCutchen, Didi Gregorius and Adam Haseley each had a base hit to cap off Philly’s offense as a team in the win. Aaron Nola allowed two earned on six hits with six strikeouts over 6.2 innings of work, not factoring in the decision. Connor Brogdon got the win in relief to improve to 1-0 after throwing a scoreless 10th inning. Zack Wheeler will start here and was 4-2 with a 2.92 ERA and 53 strikeouts last season. In his career, Wheeler is 6-5 with a 3.79 ERA and 86 strikeouts against Atlanta.
Atlanta is 37-14 in their last 51 games as a favorite and 5-1 in their last 6 games following an off day while the under is 6-1-1 in their last 8 road games. Philadelphia is 2-7 in their last 9 games overall and 14-5 in their last 19 home games while the under is 4-1 in their last 5 Saturday games. Atlanta is 1-4 in the last 5 meetings between these two teams.
I get why the Braves would be favored here as Morton is a quality pitcher and the Braves will look to bounce back quickly here. However, Wheeler’s been pretty good at home since joining the Phillies, including going 4-0 with a 2.38 ERA at home last season. The Phillies also looked scary good in winning the opener and if that kind of play can hold up over the season, the Phillies may live up to some of those lofty expectations. I’ll back Philadelphia in this one.
