The New York Mets and the Philadelphia Phillies meet Tuesday in MLB action from Citizens Bank Park.
This will be the second installment of a three-game set between these teams this week. In the opener on Monday, Philly posted a 5-3 comeback win. Check back all season long for free MLB picks at Sports Chat Place.
New York got a late start to the season this year. The Mets had a series cancelled over the weekend so this set is their first appearance so far. In the Monday game, New York had a 2-0 lead going into the bottom of the eighth but coughed up five runs in an eventual 5-3 loss. Michael Conforto notched two hits with an RBI in that one.
For the Tuesday starting pitcher role, New York will go with Marcus Stroman. Last year Stroman opted out so it’s been a while since we’ve seen him on the mound. This spring Stroman started five games, going 2-0 with a 3.44 ERA and 17 Ks in 18.1 innings of work.
Over on the Phillies’ side, they powered past the Braves in their opening series, taking wins in all three 3-2, 4-0 and 2-1. In Monday’s game the Phillies were down in the eighth inning but bagged five runs in that frame. Bryce Harper posted a run and an RBI with two walks.
For the starter role on Tuesday, the Phillies will send out Chase Anderson. Last year with the Blue Jays Anderson went 1-2 in 10 games (seven starts), posting 38 strikeouts in 33.2 innings. He’ll be a key piece in the back of the Phillies’ rotation this year if all goes well.
The Mets are 8-2 in their last 10 in game two of a series and 1-5 in their last six Tuesday games. The under is 16-6 in the Mets’ last 22 Tuesday games and 16-6-1 in their last 23 in game two of a series.
Meanwhile, the Phillies are 16-5 in their last 21 home games and 18-8 in their last 26 Tuesday games. The under is 8-3 in the Phillies’ last 11 during game two of a series and 7-2 in their last nine on grass.
PICK: I’m going to stick with the Mets to bounce back in this one. I like Anderson to have a good outing, though; he’s coming off a nice spring and will help fill out the Phillies’ pitching arsenal. That said, Stroman had a nice spring himself, with a solid strikeout rate. This should be a fun starting pitcher matchup but I think Stroman can put his team in a slightly better position.
