The Tampa Bay Rays and the Kansas City Royals meet Monday in MLB action from Kauffman Stadium.
Tampa Bay is coming off a weekend set versus the Yankees. After two strong wins, in the Sunday game the Rays bagged a victory to complete the sweep. As for the Royals, they played Toronto this weekend. Kansas City won two of the first three games, then on Sunday won again by two runs. Tampa Bay didn’t have a lot of trouble with the struggling Yankees in their first two games, winning 8-2 Friday and 6-3 Saturday. In the Sunday game it was more of the same, as the Rays beat New York 4-2. Joey Wendle posted two runs with one RBI and two hits in that one.
For Monday’s starting pitcher role, the Rays will go with Josh Fleming. He's 0-1 this year with a 1.80 ERA. Fleming has allowed five hits in 4.0 innings thus far.
Over on the Royals’ side, they lost 5-1 in the Saturday game versus the Blue Jays, but took wins 7-5 on Thursday and 3-2 in the other Saturday game. On Sunday, Kansas City scored both their runs in the bottom of the seventh in a 2-0 shutout win. Starter Brady Singer went 6.0 innings with two hits and six Ks.
For the starter job on Monday, the Royals will go with Danny Duffy. In his two appearances so far this year, Duffy has 12.0 innings, 10 hits, one earned (a homer), four walks, 11 strikeouts and a 0.75 ERA.
The Rays are 5-0 in their last five versus the AL Central and 4-1 in their last five as an underdog. Tampa is 36-16 in their last 52 Monday games and 35-17 in their last 52 in game one of a series.
Meanwhile, the Royals are 5-2 in their last seven in game one of a series and 16-35 in their last 51 Monday games. KC is 21-49 in their last 70 versus the AL East and the under is 4-1 in their last five Monday games.
PICK: I’m going to stick with the Rays. Tampa Bay has been hitting their stride lately, and had a great weekend series versus the suddenly vulnerable Yankees. Duffy should pitch pretty well on the other side here, but considering the Rays have a platoon of capable relievers who can pitch to just about anyone, I feel better on Tampa Bay. Should be a pretty good matchup and a fun one to watch.
