The Pittsburgh Pirates and the Cincinnati Reds meet Monday in MLB action from Great American Ball Park. Pittsburgh is coming off a weekend series versus the Phillies. The Pirates lost the first three of those games, then on Sunday Pittsburgh won in a shutout. As for the Reds, they played the Nationals over the weekend. Cincinnati won two of the first three, and in the Sunday finale the Reds powered out a seven-run victory. Check back all season long for free MLB picks at Sports Chat Place.

Pittsburgh didn’t have much luck against the Phillies over the weekend, falling 12-6 Thursday, 8-6 Friday and 3-0 Saturday. In the Sunday game the Pirates put up five runs across the final three frames in a 6-0 shutout win. Max Kranick put up 5.0 innings with four hits and three walks in the start.

For Monday’s starter job the Pirates didn’t initially announce a name.

Over on the Reds’ side, they lost to the Nationals 3-2 Thursday but came back for wins 8-7 Friday and 7-6 Saturday. On Sunday Cincinnati put up 14 hits in a 9-2 victory. Starting pitcher Tyler Mahle lasted 6.0 innings with three hits, no earned and two walks.

For the starting pitcher gig on Monday the Reds will go with Reiver Sanmartin in his MLB debut. Sanmartin gets the start here in replacement of Wade Miley, who is battling a neck strain.

The Pirates are 19-46 in their last 65 versus a team with a winning record and 16-43 in their last 59 versus a lefty starter. Pittsburgh is 13-42 in their last 55 road games as well.

Meanwhile the Reds are 2-5 in their last seven Monday games and 6-13 in their last 19 at home with a total of 7.0-8.5. The over is 12-3 in Cincinnati’s last 15 Monday games as well.

PICK: I’m going to take a stab on the Reds. It’ll be fun to see what the 25-year-old Sanmartin can do in his debut regardless. In 25 appearances (17 starts) at Triple-A Louisville and Double-A Chattanooga this year, Sanmartin put up a 10-2 record with a 3.32 ERA. If he can get the Reds a handful of good innings to kick things off in this one, Cincinnati should be just fine.
