The Boston Red Sox and the Arizona Diamondbacks meet Sunday in MLB action from Chase Field. This will be the finale in a three-game weekend series. The Red Sox took a five-run victory in the opener, then on Saturday Boston eked out another win. Check back all season long for free MLB picks at Sports Chat Place.

Boston Red Sox

The Sox posted 14 team hits in the Friday opener of this series, ultimately powering out a 7-2 victory. On Saturday Boston came back from an early deficit with two fourth-inning runs during a 2-1 win. Starting pitcher Garrett Whitlock finished with 5.0 innings, one earned, three hits and four Ks.

Tanner Houck will make the start for the Red Sox on Sunday. This year over nine starts Houck is 3-3 with a 4.99 ERA and 46 Ks in 48.2 innings total. Houck is 12-12 with a 3.51 career ERA in 62 games (29 starts).

Arizona Diamondbacks

Over on the Arizona side, they were down 5-0 at one point in the Friday game and never dug themselves out of the hole. On Saturday the Diamondbacks had just three hits in the loss. Zach Davies lasted 3.1 innings in the start with 3.1 innings, two earned, five hits and two walks.

Merrill Kelly will make the start for the Diamondbacks on Sunday. Across 10 starts this year Kelly is 5-3 with a 2.98 ERA and 59 Ks in 57.1 innings total. Kelly is 41-38 with a 3.87 ERA in 107 career games.

The Sox are 54-19 in their last 73 interleague road games and 59-26 in their last 85 versus the NL West. Boston is 1-4 in their last five in game three of a series.

Meanwhile, the Diamondbacks are 9-4 in their last 13 overall and 13-5 in their last 18 versus a team with a winning record. The over is 4-1 in Arizona’s last five Sunday games.

I’ll stick with the Diamondbacks in this one. Kelly has done well over his last two starts. In that pair combined he’s got three earned on seven hits and three walks in 12.0 innings, winning both. In the Saturday game, Arizona couldn’t get much of anything going at the plate but the pen kept them in it until the end. I like the Diamondbacks to stave off the sweep here.
