The Diamondbacks noticed 10 team hits in the Monday opener of this series, cruising to a 5-2 victory. On Tuesday Arizona blew an early lead in a 9-8 defeat over 12 innings. Tommy Henry went 4.2 innings in the start with four earned on six hits and three walks.
For the starter job on Wednesday it’ll be Arizona’s Ryne Nelson. Over eight starts so far Nelson is 1-2 with a 6.20 ERA and 26 Ks in 40.2 innings. Nelson is 2-3 with a 4.73 ERA in 11 career starts.
Oakland Athletics
Over on the Oakland side, they could only muster four team hits in the Monday game and were down 4-1 after just three innings. On Tuesday the A’s fought back from a 4-2 and a 6-3 deficit in the win. Starter Kyle Muller lasted 5.0 innings, giving up five earned on eight hits with three Ks.
Luis Medina will make the start for the A’s on Wednesday. Across two starts this season (the only two of his career so far) Medina is 0-2 with an 8.18 ERA and nine Ks in 11.0 innings.
The Diamondbacks are 7-2 in their last nine Wednesday games and 2-5 in their last seven in game three of a series. Arizona is 8-19 in their last 27 versus the AL West.

I’ll stay with the Diamondbacks here. Probably not touching it, though. Nelson has been pretty choppy lately; he’s got 12 combined earned runs over his last three starts in 13.2 innings total. As for Medina, he didn’t pitch terribly in his last outing but he’s still got 10 earned in 11.0 combined innings over his first pair. On Tuesday Arizona had a bad inning (the fourth) and allowed 12 hits in a pretty rough effort overall. I like Arizona to bounce back and bag a victory in the rubber match, though.
