The Atlanta Braves and the New York Mets meet Monday in MLB doubleheader action from Citi Field. These will be the second and final installments in a three-game weekend series. The Braves won the opener, then on Sunday in game two we had another postponement due to a rainout. Check back all season long for free MLB picks at Sports Chat Place.
Atlanta Braves
The Braves managed a five-inning rain-shortened victory 4-0 in the Friday opener of this series, thanks to Matt Olson’s three-RBI blast. The Saturday and Sunday installments were both postponed by bad weather.
For the starter job in the Monday game one matchup it’ll be Spencer Strider. He’s 3-0 with a 1.80 ERA and 49 strikeouts so far. As for game two, the Braves will send out Charlie Morton. In his five games so far this year Morton is 3-2 with a 2.76 ERA and 26 strikeouts in 29.1 innings.
New York Mets
Over on the Mets’ side, they were out-hit 5-3 in the Friday opener and didn’t get much chance to come back. David Peterson was the solo New York pitcher on the day, finishing with 5.0 innings, four earned, five hits, one walk and six Ks.
As starter for the Monday game one matchup, the Mets will go with Denyi Reyes. In his five games without a decision so far Reyes has a clean 0.00 ERA with 6.1 innings and seven Ks. For game two it’ll be Tylor Megill. This year Megill is 3-1 with a 3.96 ERA.
The Braves are 4-0 in their last four Monday games and 9-1 in their last 10 road games. Atlanta is 16-5 in their last 21 after an off day.
Meanwhile, the Mets are 11-4 in their last 15 Monday games and 39-16 in their last 55 in game three of a series. New York is 50-22 in their last 72 after a loss.
ANDREW’S GAME 1 FREE PICK
I’m likely going to stick with Atlanta in game one. Strider is on a roll across his last two starts, going 2-0. In that pair Strider’s got 14.0 combined innings with zero earned on three hits and three walks. He’s coming off a nice 8.0 innings with just two hits and no walks in a win versus Miami on April 24.
ANDREW’S GAME 2 FREE PICK
I’ll probably try the Braves here as well. Morton is doing a pretty solid job this year so far. Over his last three games Morton is 2-1 with a combined four earned in 19.0 innings of work on 14 hits and seven walks. He’s gone 6.0 innings or longer in all three of those outings as well. If Morton can get in another quality start the Braves will be in great shape.
