The New York Mets and the Washington Nationals meet Sunday in MLB action from Nationals Park. After a rain postponement in Saturday’s game two, we’ll get the remainder of that matchup and a game three Sunday in a four-game weekend series. The Mets took a close win in the opener. New York Mets

The Mets came back from a 2-0 hole with three sixth-inning runs Friday and eked out the opener win 3-2. Starter Tylor Megill put up 5.0 innings with one earned on four hits and four walks. New York was down 1-0 after Saturday’s game was delayed in the third.

For the starter job in the Sunday matchup the Mets will go with Max Scherzer. In his five starts thus far Scherzer is 2-2 with a 5.56 ERA and 20 Ks in 22.2 innings. Scherzer is 203-104 with a 3.13 ERA in 435 career games (426 starts).

Washington Nationals

Over on the Nationals’ side, they managed just four team hits in the Friday opener and couldn’t score after the fourth frame. MacKenzie Gore put up 4.0 clean frames with five hits and two walks.

It’ll be Jake Irvin in the start for Washington on Sunday. In his two starts this year (the only two of his MLB career so far), Irvin is 1-0 with a 0.84 ERA and eight Ks in 10.2 innings.

The Mets are 35-17 in their last 52 in game three of a series and 2-5 in their last seven Sunday games. New York is 5-13 in their last 18 overall.
Meanwhile, the Nationals are 4-0 in their last four in game three of a series and 21-50 in their last 71 at home. Washington is 17-59 in their last 76 versus the NL East.

ANDREW’S FREE PICK

I’ll probably try Washington here. It’ll be a fun starter matchup regardless, though. Irvin is coming off 6.1 clean innings with four hits and three walks against the Giants for his first MLB win on May 8. As for Scherzer, he had a bad start versus the Tigers his last time up (3.1 innings; six earned) but he was pitching well before that. With a hefty incoming bullpen matchup from both sides in the remainder of game two, a solid starting pitching effort will go a long way here. I like the Nats to pull it off.
