Boston was out-hit 9-7 by the Reds on Tuesday but still pulled off a 5-3 victory. In the Wednesday game, the Sox gave up three runs in the fifth inning during a 5-1 defeat. Starter Connor Seabold put up 5.0 innings with four earned on six hits and a walk.
Michael Wacha will take the starting role for the Sox on Thursday. Across his 20 starts so far Wacha is 11-1 with a 2.61 ERA. In 114.0 innings he has 33 earned on 91 hits and 26 walks with 92 Ks.
Over on the Yankees’ side, they coughed up four runs to the Pirates in the eighth inning Tuesday but hung on for the 9-8 win. On Wednesday New York had 11 hits and four runs in the first inning in a 14-2 victory. Luis Severino managed 5.0 innings in the start with one earned on two hits and a walk.
As starter for the Thursday game, New York will go with Jameson Taillon. So far this year Taillon is 13-5 with a 4.04 ERA in 29 starts. He’s got 158.0 innings, 71 earned, 150 hits, 29 walks and 132 Ks.
The Sox are 10-4 in their last 14 on grass and 17-38 in their last 55 versus the AL East. Boston is 5-12 in the last 17 Thursday games.
Meanwhile, the Yankees are 6-2 in their last eight versus a right-handed starter and 48-19 in their last 67 at home. New York is 31-15 in their last 46 in game one of a series.
PICK: I’m staying with the Red Sox. Wacha has been keeping his great season going pretty well lately. In his last three starts combined, Wacha has six earned runs in 19.0 innings on 20 hits and zero walks alongside 16 strikeouts. He’s a tepid 1-0 in that time however, so Wacha will need some help from the bats to get the win. Considering the way the Yankees pen has been playing lately, that shouldn’t be too much to ask.
