The Colorado Rockies and the San Diego Padres meet Friday in MLB action from Petco Park. This will be the second installment in a four-game weekend series. In Thursday’s Opening Day matchup, the Rockies secured a five-run victory. Check back all season long for free MLB picks at Sports Chat Place.

Colorado Rockies

Colorado had a rough campaign in 2022, going just 68-94 overall for a fifth-place division finish. In Thursday’s opener matchup, the Rockies scored three runs in the fifth inning along the way to a 7-2 win. Starter German Marquez put up 6.0 innings with two earned on five hits.

Starting pitcher for Colorado on Friday will be Kyle Freeland. Last season in his 31 starts, Freeland went 9-11 with a 4.53 ERA and had 131 strikeouts in 174.2 innings. Over Spring Training this year Freeland was 1-1 with a 5.79 ERA in three starts.

San Diego Padres

Over on the San Diego side, they landed at 89-73 last year, bagging a Wild Card spot along the way to a National League Championship Series appearance. In Thursdays’ 2023 opener, the Padres had a two-run lead until the fifth inning. Blake Snell had 4.1 innings with three earned in the start.

Nick Martinez will slot in as starting pitcher for the Padres on Friday. Over his 47 games (10 starts) in 2022 Martinez put up a 4-4 record with a 3.47 ERA. In 106.1 innings he had 95 Ks. This spring Martinez had a 2-1 record with a 1.93 ERA in four starts.

The Rockies are 23-53 in their last 76 road games and 4-13 in their last 17 versus the NL West. Colorado is 0-4 in their lat four in game two of a series.

Meanwhile, the Padres are 6-2 in their last eight in game two of a series and 19-7 in their last 26 Friday games. The over is 3-0-1 in San Diego’s last four in game two of a series.

ANDREW’S FREE PICK

I’m staying with the Padres in this one. San Diego was playing well for the first four innings on Thursday, and they came up with seven hits overall as a team. The Padres had a couple of bad innings however, with Snell, Nabil Crismatt and Domingo Tapia combined for all seven earned runs and 15 of the 17 hits allowed. It’s going to take a big turnaround for San Diego to come through here but they should look better in game two. As for Colorado, they had a pretty well-rounded game on both sides Thursday; that said I don’t think they’ll keep it going.
