The Philadelphia Phillies and the San Diego Padres meet Friday in MLB action from Petco Park. We will look at this from a betting perspective and determine the best bets for this game. Here’s a Philadelphia Phillies vs. San Diego Padres prediction.

Starting Pitching Matchup

The Philadelphia Phillies will be sending Aaron Nola to the mound here and Nola is 3-1 with a 3.16 ERA and 26 strikeouts this season. In his career, Nola is 2-4 with a 3.11 ERA and 61 strikeouts against the Padres. Joe Musgrove will get the start for the Padres in this one and is 3-2 with a 5.74 ERA and 23 strikeouts this season. In his career, Musgrove is 2-1 with a 3.00 ERA and 27 strikeouts against the Phillies.

Philadelphia Phillies Recap

The Philadelphia Phillies come into this series looking to build some steam after settling for a series split with the Cincinnati Reds to start the week after Thursday’s 5-0 win over the Reds. It was a bit of a change for the Phillies after sweeps of the lowly Rockies and White Sox in the pair of series prior. The Phillies rode a 4-run 3rd inning and a pitching gem from Zack Wheeler to the finish line as the Phils outhit the Reds 11-3 in the game.

Phillies Offense Starting To Cook

Trea Turner leads the Phillies with 36 hits including 9 doubles and 6 stolen bases with a .336 batting average while Kyle Schwarber has a team-high 6 home runs with 39 strikeouts this season. Bryce Harper’s added 4 doubles, 5 home runs and 16 RBIs while Alec Bohm has a team-high 21 RBIs as well as 9 doubles of his own and Brandon Marsh also has 5 home runs and 13 RBIs this season.

Philadelphia Phillies Team Facts

  • The Phillies have lost each of their last four night games against the Padres following a road win.
  • The Phillies have failed to cover the run line in four of their last five night games against NL West opponents.
  • The ‘Inning 1 UNDER 0.5 runs’ market has hit in each of the Phillies’ last five night games at Petco Park.
  • The Phillies have led after 3 innings in each of their last three games against NL West opponents.

San Diego Padres Recap

The San Diego Padres will be looking to rebound after a disappointing finish to their series with the Colorado Rockies, losing Thursday’s series finale in a 10-9 back and forth affair, settling for a split in the four-game series, which wasn’t what San Diego was looking for after their series loss to Toronto over the weekend. It was a back and forth game early in the finale on Thursday, 4-4 through three innings and the Padres looked good, leading 9-4 in the top of the 8th before giving up 6 runs in the bottom of the 8th and the Padres couldn’t rally in the top of the 9th.

Padres Have Nice Names, But Inconsistent Production

Going into Thursday’s game, Fernando Tatis Jr. leads the Padres with 6 home runs and 15 RBIs while Ha-Seong Kim has 3 home runs, 15 RBIs as well as a pair of triples and 4 doubles along with a team-high 7 stolen bases. Luis Campusano has a team-high 7 doubles and Jurickson Profar has 6 doubles while Jackson Merrill has a team-high 28 hits and a .318 batting average. Manny Machado also has the dubious distinction of leading the Padres with 24 strikeouts this season.

San Diego Padres Team Facts

  • The Padres have won each of their last seven games against National League opponents following a road loss.
  • The Padres have covered the run line in seven of their last eight games against NL East opponents following a road loss.
  • The Padres have trailed after 7 innings in each of their last seven home night games.
  • The Padres have led after 3 innings in each of their last four night games against National League opponents.
  • The Padres have trailed after 5 innings in each of their last four home night games.

Phillies vs. Padres Prediction

I’m on the Phillies here. It’s hard for me to trust the Padres after that epic meltdown on Thursday and a lot of times, teams coming off of a Coors Field series without a day off tend to struggle at the plate the next day. Aaron Nola’s also been solid since his rough season debut against the Braves, while Joe Musgrove, even in his deeper outings, has a tendency to give up a handful of runs. I think the Phillies come to play in the opener and will look to keep the ball rolling here. Give me the Phils behind another strong outing from Nola.
