Philadelphia took on the Diamondbacks this week, but fell in two of three games for a series loss. On Friday versus the Giants, Philly gave up 11 runs in the first three innings in a 13-1 loss. Kyle Gibson lasted just 1.2 frames in the start with seven earned on five hits and four walks.
As starter for the Saturday game, the Phillies will send out Noah Syndergaard. Over 20 starts this season Syndergaard is 8-9 with a 3.98 ERA. In 110.2 innings he’s managed 82 strikeouts.
Over on the Giants’ side, they struggled versus the Padres this week in a three-game sweep. On Friday versus Philly, San Francisco posted 11 hits in the blowout victory. Alex Cobb finished with 7.0 clean frames, three hits, one walk and seven strikeouts.
Jakob Junis will take the mound for the Giants on Saturday. In 17 games (14 starts) this year Junis is 4-4 with a 4.04 ERA. In 82.1 innings total he has 37 earned on 79 hits and 16 walks with 71 Ks.
Philly is 10-4 in their last 14 Saturday games and 7-3 in their last 10 in game two of a series. The Phillies are 35-16 in the last 51 versus a team with a losing record.
Meanwhile, the Giants are 6-21 in their last 27 versus a team with a winning record and 0-4 in their last four in game two of a series. The under is 6-0 in San Francisco’s last six in game two of a series.
PICK: I’m going to try the Phillies here. That said, both starters are coming off rough performances and could use a nice bounce-back effort. Syndergaard took a loss to the Pirates in his last outing with five earned on nine hits and a walk in 5.2 innings. As for Junis, he gave up six earned in 4.1 innings on nine hits versus Minnesota in his last outing. I would think both guys will take a step forward here, but I’m leaning Phillies win-wise.
