The New York Yankees and the Tampa Bay Rays meet Sunday in MLB action from Tropicana Field. This will be the finale in a four-game weekend series. New York bagged wins in the first two installments, then on Saturday Tampa Bay managed a two-run victory. Check back all season long for free MLB picks at Sports Chat Place.
New York didn’t have a ton of trouble in game one Thursday with a 7-2 win, then the Yankees managed a 2-0 win Friday to keep it going. On Saturday, New York couldn’t score after the first inning during an eventual 3-1 loss. The Yankees posted just four hits along the way.
For the starter gig in the Sunday game, the Yankees will send out Luis Severino. In his eight starts so far this year Severino is 3-0 with a 3.02 ERA. Over his 41.2 innings Severino has 38 hits, 14 earned runs, 11 walks and 43 Ks.
Over on the Rays’ side, they were only able to notch two hits (but held the Yankees to six) in the Friday loss. On Saturday, Tampa Bay had seven team hits in the comeback win. Corey Kluber finished with 6.0 innings in the start with one earned on three hits.
Shane McClanahan will take the mound for the Rays in the finale start. This season in nine starts McClanahan is 4-2 with a 2.06 ERA. In 52.1 innings he’s got 34 hits, 12 earned, 12 walks and 74 Ks.
The Yankees are 16-5 in their last 21 versus the AL East and 42-17 in their last 59 overall. New York is 36-17 in their last 53 road games.
Meanwhile, the Rays are 0-5 in their last five in game four of a series and 54-26 in their last 80 versus the AL East. Tampa is 61-29 in the last 90 at home.
PICK: I’m going to try the Rays here. We should have a really nice starting pitcher matchup on our hands regardless, though. McClanahan has just one earned in his last three starts over a span of 20.0 innings, 11 hits and three walks. Severino has done well in his last pair with one earned in 13.0 innings on nine hits and two walks. I like this one to be a lower-scoring affair, and I think the Rays have a solid shot at a win.
