The Kansas City Royals and the Minnesota Twins meet Thursday in MLB action from Target Field. Kansas City just finished up a set versus the Diamondbacks. After a split in the first two games, in the Wednesday rubber match the Royals lost in a shutout. As for Minnesota, they played the Yankees this week. The Twins won the first two games of that series, then on Wednesday Minnesota fell by six runs. Check back all season long for free MLB picks at Sports Chat Place.
Kansas City Royals
Kansas City lost to the Diamondbacks 5-4 on Monday but bounced back for a 5-4 win of their own in game two. On Wednesday the Royals were out-hit 6-5 in a 2-0 loss. Ryan Yarbrough lasted 4.0 innings with one earned on four hits and two walks.
As starter for the Thursday matchup the Royals are going with Zack Greinke. In his five starts this year Greinke is 0-3 with a 4.61 ERA and 19 strikeouts in 27.1 innings. Greinke is 223-144 in his career with a 3.43 ERA in 561 games (519 starts).
Minnesota Twins
Over on the Minnesota side, they beat the Yankees 6-1 Monday and 6-2 in the Tuesday matchup. On Wednesday the Twins gave up 14 hits in a 12-6 loss. Starter Kenta Maeda lasted 3.0 innings with 10 earned, 11 hits and two walks.
It’ll be Tyler Mahle in the start for the Twins on Thursday. Over his four starts so far Mahle is 1-2 with a 3.32 ERA. He’s got 22 Ks in 21.2 innings. Mahle holds a career record of 33-41 and a 4.32 ERA in 122 games (121 starts).
The Royals are 16-35 in their last 51 overall and 15-36 in their last 51 road games. Kansas City is 6-18 in their last 24 in game one of a series.
Meanwhile, the Twins are 5-12 in their last 17 Thursday games and 6-1 in their last seven versus the AL Central. The under is 8-3-3 in Minnesota’s last 14 in game one of a series.
ANDREW’S FREE PICK
I’m going to stick with the Twins. Probably not touching it due to the thick line, though. Mahle hasn’t had much luck in the win column lately but he hasn’t been pitching too badly. Mahle has three earned over his last two starts in 10.2 innings on seven hits and three walks, but he’s 0-1 in that time. I think he’ll have a good shot at another win here. On Wednesday the Twins had a couple of rough innings while Maeda (and Brent Headrick early on) was out there but the team calmed down in the later innings. A good start from Mahle and a few early runs will go a long way in this one.
