The St. Louis Cardinals and the Washington Nationals meet Tuesday in MLB action from Nationals Park. This will be the second installment in a three-game series. In the Monday opener, the Cardinals powered out a high-scoring win. Check back all season long for free MLB picks at Sports Chat Place.

St. Louis Cardinals

The Cardinals played the Mets over the weekend, winning two of three games for a series victory. On Monday versus Washington, St. Louis posted four runs in the fifth inning alone during an 8-6 win. Starting pitcher Jack Flaherty went 6.1 innings with six earned on 10 hits and a walk.

For the starter job on Tuesday the Cardinals will go with Jordan Montgomery. In his 14 starts this year Montgomery is 3-7 with a 3.91 ERA and 73 strikeouts over 78.1 innings. Montgomery is 31-30 in his career with a 3.85 ERA in 123 games (122 starts).

Washington Nationals

Over on the Nationals’ side, they lost all three games in a weekend sweep by the Marlins during their last set. On Monday Washington blew an early 5-0 lead on the way to 11 team hits. Josiah Gray managed 5.0 innings with six earned on nine hits and a walk as starter.

It’ll be MacKenzie Gore in the starter role for the Nationals on Tuesday. Across his 14 starts this year Gore is 3-5 with a 3.74 ERA and 87 strikeouts over 74.2 innings. Gore is 7-9 with a 4.11 ERA in 30 career games (27 starts).

The Cardinals are 2-5 in their last seven road games versus a lefty starter and 1-4 in their last five in game two of a series. The under is 7-3-1 in St. Louis’ last 11 in game two of a series.

Meanwhile, the Nationals are 20-45 in their last 65 at home versus a lefty starter and 27-61 in their last 88 at home. Washington is 7-25 in their last 32 Tuesday games.

ANDREW’S FREE PICK

I’ll stick with the Cardinals here. Probably not touching it, though. Montgomery hasn’t been too bad over his last three starts, totaling 18.0 innings with four earned on 14 hits and four walks for a 1-1 record. In Monday’s opener St. Louis started out slowly but eventually got to Gray. The offense collected 11 team hits while the bullpen posted just one hit, no earned, no walks and one strikeout. St. Louis will need a nice performance out of Montgomery, but I think they’ve got a solid shot at keeping it going with another W in game two.
