Alexander Zverev will meet Matteo Berrettini in the Third Round of the 2023 Wimbledon Championships. The match will be played on Saturday July 8th, 2023. 

Alexander Zverev is the 19th seed here at the 2023 Wimbledon Championships and is ranked 21st in the world rankings. The German is seemingly near his best after a long injury layoff, with some solid recent results. On paper, he has had a smooth road to the Third Round, but hasn’t looked fully convincing yet on the grass. He surprisingly dropped a set to lucky Yosuke Watanuki before recovering well to clinch it. While he served well throughout, it was a bit alarming to see how frequently he seemed to lose focus and he will have to be fully locked in against a resurgent Matteo Berrettini. 

Matteo Berrettini is unseeded here at the 2023 Wimbledon Championships and is ranked 38th in the world. Like his next opponent Alexander Zverev, he is making a return to the Tour after a long injury break, and has not quite looked like his old self. The 2021 Wimbledon Finalist is comfortable on this surface for sure, and was dominant in a 6-3, 6-4, 6-4 win over Alex de Minaur. Many predicted that he would struggle in that encounter, but he served amazingly, hitting 13 aces and winning almost 90% of his first serve points. He is the slight underdog here, but he easily has the upside to win this one. 

I am going against the rankings here and picking Matteo Berrettini to win here. Both men are highly skilled and experienced, but the Italian has been more convincing so far this week, and has the better and more reliable serve. Alexander Zverev is capable of winning this, but his form has been quite shaky this week, and I think that Berrettini is getting back to his 2021 form which led him to the Final here before. It’ll be must-see TV, and both men will win a set, but ultimately the Italian will prove too strong and should move on here at the 2023 Wimbledon Championships.
