Carlos Alcaraz and Daniil Medvedev are in for a redux of their Wimbledon semfinal from two months ago. There, the Spaniard totally brutalized Medvedev with his suffocating power and relentless baseline aggression. Alcaraz has looked every inch as perfect in his run to the semifinal of the US Open where he is attempting to defend his crown. The 20-year-old defeated German 12th seed Alexander Zverev 6-3, 6-2, 6-4 with embarrassing ease. He has dropped just one set en route to the last four.

Daniil Medvedev, meanwhile, tapped into his best tennis for the US Open. After a subpar US swing in the tune-up tournaments, Medvedev has enjoyed a fruitful fortnight in a venue where he won his only major title back in 2021 when he defeated Novak Djokovic. Medvedev defeated compatriot Andrey Rublev in straight sets in sweltering conditions when the heatwave swept through New York on Wednesday. The Russian third seed struggled to breath for the second match in a row and needed to request an inhaler to curb the problem. Let’s see if Medvedev will have enough in the tank and most importantly the game plan to outsmart Alcaraz.

Carlos Alcaraz leads their head-to-head, winning their last two matches, on hard courts in Indian Wells and the grass at Wimbledon. Both matches took place this year and that makes this a daunting matchup for Medvedev. But I’m certain we’ll get a better performance from Medvedev. He’ll try to shock Alcaraz will all sorts of uncanny shot-making. The reason why Medvedev hates this matchup is that he can’t track down as many balls as his counterpunching is null in the face of Alcaraz’s clinical ball striking. And we’ve seen him become edgy at this tournament, and if that is the case this could be another routine win for the Spaniard. I can probably see Medvedev pinching a set, nothing more. And I think we’ll get the final that we all hoped for at the start of the tournament.
