Iga Swiatek vs. Maria Sakkari
June 9, 2021 8:00 am EDT
Iga Swiatek (8) meets Maria Sakkari (17) in the quarter finals of the 2021 French Open on Wednesday, June 9th 2021.
Will Maria Sakkari continue to cause upsets here in Paris as she aims to make her best ever Grand Slam performance by reaching the semis, or will Iga Swiatek continue to shine and make her way closer to the Final as she aims to defend her title and rise up the rankings?
Maria Sakkari came through her fourth round match by beating Sofia Kenin in straight sets 6-1/6-3. Sakkari was able to convert most of the opportunities that Kenin presented to her, and this was really key to getting the momentum in her corner and then running away with the match. Maria Sakkari is a very powerful opponent who will always give if her best shot, and in the last year she has been able to get some big wins under her belt, but can she now get herself into the semi finals here in Paris by causing another upset?
Iga Swiatek continues to love the conditions here in Paris as she won her fourth round match against Marta Kostyuk, beating her in 2 sets 6-3/6-4. Iga is so hard to beat in general, but when she steps on clay, and the clay here in Paris, she has shown us that it is a very tough task to beat her. Iga will be happy with her performance and she will know that she is in strong form, but she never gets too far ahead of herself and she will ensure she prepared a strong game plan to ensure the upset of Sakkari is not successful.
This is going to be the 1st meeting between both players, and we are in for a very interesting encounter. Both players played extremely well in their fourth round match and they will both come in here willing to give it their best, but I think that Iga Swiatek can play at a much higher level than Maria Sakkari, especially on clay. If this was on a hard court I could see an upset, but on clay in Paris there is no chance that Maria Sakkari knocks out the defending champion who has been in great form this year.
