Jannik Sinner will meet Lorenzo Sonego in the Round of 16 at the 2023 Halle Open. The match will be played on Thursday June 22nd, 2023.

Jannik Sinner is the fourth seed here at the 2023 Halle Open and is ranked 9th on the ATP Tour. The Italian defeated the French veteran 6-3, 5-7, 6-2 in a scrappy match where he was very wasteful. Sinner has a big serve and some of the biggest groundstrokes on the tour but lacks the grass court experience at this stage. He will have to be much better here if he is to get past Lorenzo Sonego, as he has more firepower than Gasquet. Sinner is the favorite here but it really is a toss up at this stage. 

Lorenzo Sonego is unseeded here at the 2023 Halle Open and is ranked 39th in the world. Like his opponent Jannik Sinner, he needed three sets to get through his First Round match, defeating Aslan Karatsev 6-2, 3-6, 6-2. Sonego can be erratic at times, but he has a strong all-around game and a big serve. On a good day he will be very difficult to beat and will be liking his chances here if he serves well. 

This all-Italian match should be exciting to watch, between two talented shotmakers. Lorenzo Sonego is as talented as they come, but is also as inconsistent as they come. While he has not yet found his footing on grass this year, we need to remember that Jannik Sinner was a few games away from defeating Novak Djokovic on this surface at Wimbledon last year, and is by far the more consistent of the two. I wouldn’t back him to win in straight sets given how he looked against Gasquet, but I am confident that he will win here and move on to the Quarters of the 2023 Halle Open.
