Third seed Jessica Pegula will face 17th seed Madison Keys in an all-American fourth-round clash at the 2023 US Open. The match will be played on Monday, September 4, 2023.

As the top seeds come crashing down at the 2023 US Open, Jessica Pegula continues to be a tide of calm and consistency as she is now one match win away from returning to the quartefinals in a Grand Slam yet again. Straight sets wins over Camila Giorgi and Patricia Maria Tig kicked off Pegula’s US Open adventure in the first week, and passed her first real test of the tournament with a three-set win over resurgent former World No. 3 Elina Svitolina in the third round. Also pertinent to note, Pegula is still active in two more competitions at this year’s US Open. She’ll be on doubles duty alongside Coco Gauff after playing Madison Keys, and she’s also secured her spot in the last eight in mixed doubles with another American, Austin Krajicek.

Madison Keys is a steadying presence in the world’s Top 20 and is looking to reach the quarterfinals of the US Open for the first time since 2018. Keys has put together an awesome season that began with a successful run at the inaugural United Cup for the USA, in a team replete with talent that also included Jessica Pegula. Although the 28-year-old’s run at the Australian Open ended at the third round stage after starting the year on a seven-match win streak, she’s been very consistent throughout the season, making the quarterfinals or better in five WTA tournaments. Can she make it six on Monday?

This should be an intriguing matchup as these two players haven’t played a lot. Their solitary meeting on hard courts was contested last year in San Diego, where Pegula won it in two tight sets. The pressure will most certainly be on the higher-ranked Pegula. She’s never been in better form coming to a major than this year, and with a wealth of experience and learnings from past travails. Keys has incredible power – one of the few WTA players who could take a match out of her opponents’ racket. But Pegula’s excellent counter-punching skills have been on full display and it appears the Extra Duty balls suit her style of play. Key has great track record of surpassing expectations at Grand Slams, but this should be Pegula’s moment.
